Hero's Welcome for the Carnival Valor PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Bridgetown Port welcomed its 10th inaugural visit from a cruise ship this season on Wednesday.

Officials from Barbados Port Inc. and other specially invited guests, including the US Embassy, Barbados Tourism Authority, Barbados Manufacturers’ Association, Bridgetown Cruise Terminal, Platinum Port Agency and Foster & Ince Cruise Services, welcomed the Carnival Valor to the shores of Barbados in a short reception that included the traditional exchanging of plaques.

The Valor, an impressive vessel designed with the theme ‘Heroes and Heroics’, has taken over the route previously operated by the Carnival Victory. With an increased passenger capacity of 2,974, the Valor becomes the newest and largest ship to operate year-round from the port of San Juan with extended calls in St. Thomas U.S.V.I, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and St. Maarten.

Chief Executive Officer of Barbados Port Inc., David Jean-Marie, expressed his delight at welcoming the Valor on its maiden voyage to Bridgetown. “This is indeed a special moment for all of us here at the Port to host a vessel of the calibre of the Carnival Valor. Our team works tirelessly to ensure that we realise our vision of being the best of all Caribbean ports and the commitment to the region demonstrated by Carnival Cruise Lines reinforces our efforts. We are pleased to welcome Captain Bovo, his crew and all passengers on board and we encourage everyone to make the most of their time on the island and discover some of what Barbados has to offer.”

This sentiment was echoed by Ryan Blackett, Director, Cruise, Barbados Tourism Authority, as he commended Barbados Port Inc. on a phenomenal job, citing their continuous outstanding performance in customer satisfaction surveys and their role as a leader in the region. Blackett also thanked the Carnival Corporation for their commitment to Barbados and the region, highlighting that the increased capacity of the Valor will mean additional tourists visiting the island.

Encouraging business owners to explore innovative ways to capitalise on the cruise industry, Blackett referenced the recent Cruise Ship (Opening of Facilities) Bill passed by Government which gives cruise ships permission to open their casinos in the Bridgetown Port. “This legislation is a brilliant move as it means the ships are berthed for longer periods and passengers do not feel as hassled to rush back on board. It represents a unique opportunity for businesses in Barbados and we need to look at developing what we have to offer as a destination.”

The ship’s captain, Captain Bovo, welcomed the news of this legislation. “That is fantastic! More relaxation for both the passengers and the crew and more time to enjoy the island.” Having previously visited Barbados with the Carnival Destiny, Bovo shared his excitement about being at the helm of the Valor and said he was looking forward to its new route through the Caribbean.

The potential of the cruise industry to benefit a myriad of sectors was also raised by Martin Ince, Chief Executive Officer, Foster & Ince Cruise Services, as he revealed that many local providers are now involved in servicing visiting ships to the island.

The celebratory occasion was marked with the presentation of a commemorative plaque and special gift given to Captain Bovo by Barbados Port Inc. as well as a presentation to Captain Bovo by the Barbados Tourism Authority.
